Chicos Tacos LA

By Nina Gelb with Chicas Tacos Founders

Three native Californians – Chris Blanchard, Jon Blanchard, and Nico Rusconi – have brought their super delicious new Chicas Tacos to downtown LA. The space is very cool and eclectic; the food simply delicious. Chicas has a warm home-like feeling, boasting high-quality food: fresh, organic, never frozen, non-GMO, line-caught fish and natural ingredients supporting local farmers. As Chris tells me, “We do not have any freezers in our kitchen. We receive fresh produce and proteins every morning and prepare tacos for our customers fresh daily – just as we experienced on the farms in the Valle de Guadalupe.”

Being a SoCal native myself, it’s interesting to learn how these three guys came to open up this special little gem.

Growing up in Newport Beach, Chris and Jon traveled often to Mexico as kids, and gained an appreciation for the food and culture. Chris founded a marketing/advertising agency, while Jon founded BLVD Hospitality and is behind the Ace Hotel. Nico joined Jon as a partner in BLVD and together their interests aligned, expanding BLVD into investments and the build-out of concepts such as Chicas Tacos.

Chris, Jon, and Nico share the affinity for a region from which Chicas Tacos unique style of cooking originates: The Valle de Guadalupe. This lush wine region 30 minutes inland from Ensenada boasts some of the oldest wineries in North America, combined with the food that is local, honest, organic, and authentic. It is in the Valle where the three amigos first met Carmela (a.k.a. Chica), where Chicas Tacos not only derives its name, but also where the simple yet bold and unique tacos originated.

“My abuela taught me that the freshest ingredients enhance every bite. In our kitchen, we connect and celebrate as a family over the bold flavors of Mexico. My kitchen is your kitchen, my table is your table, and when you eat with us…you are my familia!” Carmela aka Chicas

What’s special on the menu? Besides everything, Chicas created five tacos and does them so well: pork (chile verde), angus steak, marinated chicken, beer-battered fish, and cauliflower chorizo. Your taste buds will be revived by bold fresh goodness!

They also fresh press three aguas frescas (watermelon cinnamon, lavender cantaloupe, and cucumber lime mint) daily and offer guacamole, a side Baja Mediterranean salad, and a full Caesar salad – paying homage to its inventor Caesar, a Mexican culinary icon from Tijuana.

LuxxList scoop: there’s a secret menu, just ask the kitchen. I can’t wait to go back and have them open up here in the Beverly Hills/West Hollywood area (hint hint)!
